I am a German owner of a TX2140eg Tablet PC from Hewlett-Packard and just experienced the sudden death of my tablet, caused by a severe production failure. In most cases this happens shortly after the two-year warranty has expired.

What is the Problem?

In various forum threads on HP.com and also other websites (see herehere or here) complains are found about issues with the wireless card, the standby / hibernate mode, hang ups with graphic failures and complete failures of HP TX1000 and TX2000 tablets. In the worst case the LEDs are on and the fan is running, but the screen remains black. The source of these problems is a general overheating of the motherboard that affects in long term the Nvidia GPU. Due to the heat the soldered connections of the GPU break and the chip looses the connection to the motherboard. Latter causes a total failure of the Laptop. It seems that in general all HP Pavilions with the motherboard 463649-001 (complete list of laptops) are affected. Moreover, there is an extended warranty for the DV-Series, that does not include the TX tablets. Engagenet.com just recently reported on that issue too.

What can you do?

As a first thing you should check if there is still warranty on your laptop. The status can be found out  at HP using the serial and product number on the back of the laptop.  If you are lucky and the warranty has not expired, you should contact HP and they will cover the repair.

In all other cases HP should be contacted as well. You should make clear that they sold you a defect product and that you demand replacement or repair. You might sent them a link to the corresponding English or German Facebook  page or this page. Canadian and US citizens are encouraged to file a complain at the Better Business Bureau. It also helps if you

What about repairing it on your own?

It is possible to buy a new motherboard and replace it on your own. Searching Google gives many suppliers  with prices starting at $150. Some fellows also posted a Youtube video where they show a way to resolder the GPU using a coin, aluminium foil, cardboard and a high power light bulb.

For more information on that topic check out the English or German support page on Facebook.
